What it is
An Aufhebungsbescheid cancels an earlier decision, fully or in part. Jobcenters, the Familienkasse and other offices send one when they believe a benefit was granted wrongly or your circumstances changed.
§ 48 SGB X · Aufhebung · checked 07.10.2026Why you got one
The most common reasons are new income, a change in rent or household, or information that reached the office late.
What it can cost you
It often comes with an Erstattungsbescheid: a demand to pay back what you received. Both are frequently combined in one letter, called an Aufhebungs- und Erstattungsbescheid.
§ 50 SGB X · Erstattung · checked 07.10.2026Your deadline
You can object within one month after the letter counts as delivered. For letters sent by post, that is usually the fourth day after the date on the letter.

How to object
A Widerspruch must be in writing and signed, or made in person at the office.
- Write which decision you object to: date and reference number.
- Say why, in plain words. You can add reasons later.
- Sign it and send it so you have proof: Einwurf-Einschreiben, or hand it in and ask for a stamped copy.
When to get legal help
If a large amount is at stake or the office rejects your objection, you can get state-funded legal advice (Beratungshilfe) if your income is low.
